● Source first, fog second

Mosquito Control

Breeding water found and removed first, resting sites treated second, fogging only where it is warranted — because fogging alone buys you one evening.

  • Every breeding site found and listed in your report
  • Larviciding where water has to stay
  • Residual treatment to shaded resting sites

Fogging is the part everyone asks for and the part that matters least

A fogging machine kills the mosquitoes flying through the mist at that moment. It leaves nothing behind. Fog a villa garden on Thursday evening and by Saturday the population is back, because the water they hatched from is still there.

That is not an argument against fogging — it has a place, before an outdoor event or to knock down a heavy adult population fast. It is an argument against buying fogging on its own, which is what most mosquito “treatments” in the UAE amount to.

Where they are actually breeding

Mosquitoes need standing water and about a week. Not a pond — a bottle cap’s worth will do for some species. On a UAE property the breeding site is almost always one of these, and most of them are things nobody thinks of as water:

  • Air-conditioning condensate trays and drip points. The most overlooked breeding site in this country, and it refills itself every day.
  • Plant pot saucers and the gap under raised planters.
  • Blocked floor gullies and yard drains, especially behind a store room or in a side alley.
  • Water features and ornamental ponds without movement or fish.
  • Pool covers, and pools left untreated over a long absence.
  • Irrigation boxes and valve chambers that hold water after each cycle.
  • Roof drains, gutters and parapet outlets that pond rather than drain.
  • Buckets, wheelbarrows, kids’ toys, tyres and tarpaulin folds left out after a wash or a rain.
  • Construction water on a neighbouring plot — the one you cannot fix, and the reason some properties need a maintained programme rather than a visit.

The inspection is mostly this: walking the property finding water. It is unglamorous and it is the whole job.

How we treat it

  1. Source reduction first. Every breeding point found is emptied, drained, screened or redirected. Where the water has to stay — a feature, an irrigation chamber — it gets a larvicide instead, which kills the larvae before they ever fly.
  2. Resting sites, not open air. Adults spend the day in cool shade: dense shrubs, the underside of foliage, shaded walls, behind the AC unit, inside a store room. A residual treatment to those surfaces is what keeps working after we leave. Spraying the middle of a lawn achieves nothing.
  3. Entry points. Door seals and window screens checked, because an unscreened bathroom extract or a torn flyscreen undoes the outdoor work every evening.
  4. Fogging, if it is warranted. For a heavy adult population or a date you need the garden usable, as the fast knockdown on top of the above — not instead of it.
  5. A written report naming every breeding site found, so you know what to keep checking. That list is worth more than the treatment, because most of it is yours to maintain.

What you can do that works

  • Tip out anything holding water once a week. One pass around the property, every week, beats any spray.
  • Pipe the air-conditioning condensate to a drain rather than letting it pool.
  • Keep water features moving, or stock them with fish.
  • Clear floor gullies and roof outlets so they drain rather than pond.
  • Fit and repair flyscreens, and check the bathroom extract has a screen behind it.
  • Thin dense shade planting against the house — it is where the adults sit out the day.

When it is not your property’s fault

If you are next to an active construction site, an unmaintained villa or open land that floods, your own property can be spotless and you will still have mosquitoes. In that situation a one-off treatment is money poorly spent and we will say so: what works is a maintained programme with larviciding on your side of the boundary, timed to the pressure. That is the honest answer even though it is the less profitable one to give first.

What it costs

Mosquito work is quoted with the visit. For a villa it is normally priced into the perimeter and garden treatment rather than charged separately, because the job overlaps with what we are already doing to the soil line and the planting — see pricing for the bands, and residential pest control for what a villa visit covers.

Properties with continuing pressure — mature irrigated gardens, a water feature, a neighbouring plot you cannot control — belong on an annual contract, where the breeding sites get re-checked each visit instead of rediscovered next summer. For restaurants with outdoor seating and for staff accommodation, see commercial pest control.

Common questions

Why did fogging not work?

Because fogging kills the adults flying through the mist at that moment and leaves nothing behind. If the water they hatched from is still on the property, the population is back within days. Fogging is a fast knockdown to use on top of source reduction, not instead of it.

Where are they breeding if I have no pond?

Almost always somewhere you would not call water. Air-conditioning condensate trays are the most overlooked breeding site in the UAE and they refill every day. After that: plant pot saucers, blocked floor gullies, irrigation valve chambers, pool covers, roof outlets that pond, and anything left outside after a wash. Some species need no more than a bottle cap's worth.

How long until the mosquitoes stop?

Adults drop within a day or two of treatment. The lasting result depends on the breeding sites being gone — which is why your report lists every one we found. Where the pressure comes from outside your boundary, expect to manage it rather than end it.

My neighbour's plot is the problem. Can you still help?

Partly, and we will be straight about the limits. With an active construction site or flooded open land next door, your property can be spotless and you will still have mosquitoes. What works is larviciding and resting-site treatment on your side, maintained on a schedule. A one-off treatment in that situation is money poorly spent.

Is the treatment safe around children, pets and fish?

Tell us what is on the property before we arrive. Larvicide choice changes where there are fish or edible planting, resting-site treatment is applied to shaded surfaces rather than play areas, and the technician confirms the re-entry time on site and hands over the Safety Data Sheet for everything used.

Do you treat for dengue or malaria mosquitoes specifically?

The method is the same whatever the species: remove the breeding water, treat the resting sites. What changes is where we look — some species breed in clean container water close to the building, others in ground water further out. If there is a public health notice in your area, say so when you book and we will prioritise the visit.
