Which ant you have decides everything
Ant problems in the UAE come down to a handful of species, and the wrong treatment on the wrong one makes the problem measurably worse rather than slightly less effective.
Pharaoh ants and ghost ants — the tiny pale or yellowish ones trailing across a kitchen worktop, along a window frame or up a bathroom wall. These are the most common indoor ants we treat, and they are the reason this page exists. Spraying them triggers what is called budding: the colony fragments and scatters, and a single trail becomes three or four in different rooms. If you have sprayed and now have more trails than you started with, that is what happened, and it was not your fault — it is what the spray does.
Black and brown garden ants — larger, outdoors, nesting in irrigated planting and coming inside to forage. Treated from the nest outside in, not at the trail.
Big-headed ants — often found in soil and under paving, throwing up small piles of excavated earth along the edges of tiles and kerbs.
Samsum ants — dark, ground-nesting, and the one that matters medically. Their sting is genuinely painful and can cause a systemic allergic reaction. If someone in the property has been stung and had more than local swelling — hives away from the sting site, wheezing, dizziness or facial swelling — that is a medical matter first, not a pest control one. Get medical attention, then call us about the nest.
Why we bait instead of spraying
A worker ant on your worktop is a tiny fraction of the colony, and killing it changes nothing. What matters is the queen and the brood, which you will never see.
Gel and liquid bait is placed on the trails in small quantities and carried back to the nest, where it reaches the part of the colony that is actually producing ants. It is deliberately slow: a bait that killed foragers on contact would never get home, and getting home is the entire mechanism. Expect the trail to look busier for a day or two while they feed, then thin out.
Which bait matters as well, because it depends on what the colony is currently feeding on — sugar-feeding and protein-feeding phases change through the season, and a bait the colony ignores is a wasted visit. That is part of what the inspection establishes.
The one thing that will ruin the treatment: wiping down the trail with detergent or spraying it. The trail is the delivery route. Leave it alone until the bait is taken.
Apartments and villas are different problems
In an apartment, ants are usually coming in along a specific route — a window frame, a balcony door threshold, a gap where a pipe passes through a wall, or from a neighbouring unit. The work is baiting the trail, finding the entry route and sealing it, and removing what is drawing them: a leaking tap, food residue in a bin, or pet food left out.
In a villa, the nest is almost always outside, in irrigated planting against the building line. Treating indoors alone means a new trail within weeks. The work takes in the external perimeter, the soil line and the garden, and the single biggest fix is usually free: move the irrigation away from the base of the wall. Drip lines and sprinkler heads watering your plinth keep the soil permanently damp exactly where you least want a nest — and it is the same condition that drives termite risk, which is why the two problems so often arrive together.
Keeping them out
- Water the planting, not the base of the wall. This one change ends more villa ant problems than any treatment.
- Fix dripping taps, weeping irrigation lines and air-conditioning condensate discharging next to the foundation.
- Seal the gaps where pipes pass through walls and cabinet backs, and check the threshold seals on balcony and garden doors.
- Wipe worktops at night and empty the bin — but do not scrub an active trail during a baiting programme.
- Feed pets indoors, or clear the bowl after twenty minutes.
- Keep sugar, honey, dates and open packets in sealed containers rather than their original wrapping.
- Cut back branches and planting touching an external wall, which act as a bridge past everything at ground level.
What it costs
Ant control starts at AED 180, excluding 5% VAT. In a villa it is normally quoted together with the perimeter treatment, because the nest is outside and treating only the inside is the expensive way to do it twice. The inspection is free and there is no charge if you decline the quote — the pricing page sets out the bands and what moves them.
Properties with mature irrigated planting tend to have continuing ant pressure rather than a one-off problem, and four scheduled visits a year on an annual contract work out below two emergency call-outs. Residential and commercial work is quoted the same way, and food premises need ants documented per visit like anything else.
